Talking Images aims to create space for in depth discussion with and between writers, artists and still or moving works. The first evening of this format is a conversation between critic, writer and researcher Ismail Fayed, artists and photographers Mai Al Shazly, Mohamed Ezz and Nadia Mounier, and the works selected for this occasion. Through close readings and discursive engagement Talking Images will try to linger and dwell, rather than rush through the wide range of topics and visual material.

Talking Images will be continued as a sporadic series with different guests throughout the year.

Language: The conversation will be in Arabic.

يهدف حديث الصور الناطقة لخلق مساحة للمناقشات بين الكتاب والفنانين، والاعمال المصورة الساكنة والمتحركة. وفي هذا الإطار، يقوم الناقد والكاتب والباحث إسماعيل فايد خلال الأمسية الأولى بمحاورة الفنانين والمصورين: مى الشاذلى ومحمد عز ونادية منير ومناقشة الأعمال التي تم إختيارها لهذه المناسبة. ويسعى حديث الصور الناطقة لأن يتاح لكل عمل من الأعمال المعروضة الوقت اللازم، من خلال القراءة الدقيقة والخطاب التفاعلي.

وستستمر سلسلة أحاديث الصور الناطقة على مدار العام، من وقت إلى أخر.

Photographer John Perkins lead a workshop with the theme of "The Picture Story," where participants look at presenting their chosen photo projects in magazines and galleries. Each participant will try to find a unique photographic voice, and will be encouraged to follow a thread to its conclusion.

The workshop will conclude with a projection of participants work on 20
June 2011 at 2:00 pm in Rawabet Theatre.

للفنان جون بيركينز

قام المصور الفوتوغرافى جون بيركينز بإدارة ورشة عمل عن "قصة الصورة". فى خلال الورشة، سوف نبحث طريقة تقديم مشاريع التصوير للمجلات والجاليريهات. يقوم المشاركون بتصوير موضوعاتهم خلال الورشة بحيث يحاول كل مشارك أن سوف يحاول أن يجد صوتا فوتوغرافيا خاصا به، وسيتم تشجيعه على تتبع الخيط الفنى الذى يختاره من البداية وحتى النهاية.

مع نهاية الورشة يتم عرض اعمال المشاركين فى ٢٠ يونيو ٢٠١١ فى مسرح روابط.

9 – 12 April 2011

The Waiting Panorama is a four-day film workshop revolving around the theatrical and cinematic genre of Tableau Vivant. The aim is to produce a film work, in collaboration with Danish artists Tina Helen and Soren Thilo Funder, that address the living situation of a Cairo citizen. Urban society is arranged in a long series of moments of waiting and for certain citizens the act of waiting even becomes a forced state of being. The typical waiting situation will be turned upside down in a series of “living pictures” generated collaboratively in the workshop. The act of waiting becomes the generator for discussions and interpretations – waiting for citizenship, waiting for democracy, waiting for love, waiting for answers, waiting for the bus, waiting for something unknown. The Waiting Panorama is not interested in “waiting” as a passive moment, but rather focuses on “waiting” as an active living movement.

The workshop will range over the different aspects of filmmaking, so the participants will collectively work with script, acting, set design and production. The workshop will run for four days and all participants are expected to be present all days. 


Tina Helen is a visual artist based in Copenhagen. Her work emphasizes the importance of synthesising the practical and theoretical, in the understanding and production of images. She has worked internationally on numerous projects and collaborations within the field of activism, humanitarianism and fine arts. Tina Helen has a MA in Visualization from The Danish Design School and is currently doing a Master at the department of Art and Culture Studies at the University of Copenhagen. Previous projects include: Co-creator of the magazine ‘VisAvis’ - a publication that focus on migration and asylum in Denmark. Workshops with the children at MMCC Culture house in Kabul, Afghanistan. Concept development and design of a conflict resolution kit in collaboration with the Danish Conflict Resolution Centre. Set Design for various television and film productions. In November, 2010, Tina Helen arranged a workshop at the SAWA Outreach Program.
Soren Thilo Funder is a visual artist based in Copenhagen, Denmark. His works are audio-visual productions dealing with diverse cultural fields and integrating aspects of critical theory, literature, theater, cinema, political activism and other counter-cultural disciplines. Soren Thilo Funder has a MA from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He has exhibited his works in international galleries, film festivals, museum exhibitions and public space exhibitions. He has been an artist-in-residency at Townhouse Gallery in Cairo, Frankfurter Kunstverein in Frankfurt Am Main and Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center in Istanbul. He was furthermore represented at the 2nd International Moscow Biennial for Young Art, the 6th International Liverpool Biennial and Manifesta 8. Consecutive to the workshop at SAWA, Soren Thilo Funder will present a solo exhibition of his own video works at The Townhouse Gallery.

يتشرف نادي إن فوكس بدعوتكم لحضور ورشة عمل من يومين عن فن تصوير الأبيض و الأسود. يقود الورشة كل من الفنان أحمد علي فوزي و الفنان محمد عز  . اليوم الأول يوم الجمعة الموافق 8 إبريل بمقر نادي إن فوكس و هو عبارة عن ورشة تفاعلية نستمع فيها إلى  آراء الفنانين فوزي و عز في الأبيض و الأسود من خلال أعمالهم المميزة و يضيفا إلى معلوماتنا النصائح المهمة لتصوير هذا الفن المميز و كيفية الخروج بصورة ناجحة على أساس هذه الفكرة . هذا و يعد فوزي و عز من أكثر الفنانين تميزا في فن تصوير الأبيض و الأسود و دائما ما تحصل أعمالهم على إعجاب الكثير هذا بالإضافة إلى الجوائز القيمة التي يزخر بها أرشيفهم الفني . تبدأ الورشة في تمام الساعة الثانية و النصف ظهرا و تستمر حتى الخامسة و الدعوة عامة . 

اليوم الثاني يوم السبت الموافق 9 إبريل  عبارة عن ورشة تصوير تبدأ من باب زويلة و تستمر حتى جامع الحاكم بشارع المعز ,على أن يقوم كل المصورون بتسجيل صورهم بطريقة الأبيض و الأسود و سوف يتم الإعلان عن تفاصيل التجمع و التوقيت قريبا باذن الله . نتمنى لكم ورشة موفقة بإذن الله

CIC Creative Photography Workshop: The Wrong Picture

I liked the the expirement very much. talking about photos is sometimes much valuable than photos themselves. insight that the workshop was only 3 days, but I have got a very good experience.

The Wrong Picture
In a time when many people take pictures, many do it as an automatic practice, and few do so with much conscious reflection. That has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the picture, or whether it is a good picture or not.

What this workshop is really about is to answer this simple question: Does what we actually like to photograph reflect what we really are good at photographing? The workshop is designed to explore our watching and observational abilities. It stresses that “looking” is more important in photography than “clicking”. The participants will discuss and identify their “normal” habits and will begin to go beyond this, to discover other possibilities of what might be more interesting. There is no “Wrong Picture”.

الصورة دي غلط؟

 ‫في الوقت الذي صار فيه التقاط الصور أمراً اعتيادياً، فإن الغالبية تمارس التصوير كرد فعل لمثيرٍ ما‫، بينما القليل يمارسه عن وعي. كل ذلك ليس له علاقة بمستوى الصورة الفوتوغرافية أو جودتها. ‫تهدف هذا الورشة التدريبية إلى محاولة إجابة السؤال البسيط: هل ما نفضّل تصويره هو ذاته ما نعد ماهرون في تصويره؟ صممت هذه الورشة لتستكشف قدراتنا البصرية والتحليلية، وتدفع كل الحدود التي قد تقف في سبيل الإبداع، مؤكدة على أن الرؤية في التصوير تسبق ضغطة الزر. سوف يتعلم المشاركون مهارة تجاوز ما هو "إعتيادي" والإستكشاف وفرص وجود احتمالات تفوقه إثارة

CIC launches the ANA publication, containing eight brand new photo stories about the political, social and cultural life of Egypt today. The full-colour bilingual publication will be available for free at the launch. There will also be a short public discussion on the project and its key questions between the participants, a diverse group of photojournalists, artists, citizen journalists, and other practitioners.

The Alternative News Agency (ANA) is a pilot project that over the past four months has brought these people together to workshop ideas, receive training, and share skills about the political and social roles of the photographic image. As well as providing basic photojournalism training, the sessions involved art historical, critical and legal elements aimed at producing a lateral discussion that drew from the experiences of all the participants. Taking the diversity of approaches and attitudes as a strength, the ANA aims to create a space in which the photojournalistic, artistic, and online reportage approaches can broaden and challenge each other. From here, each participant researched and developed individual photo stories that speak broadly about the country in the weeks leading up to the Parliamentary Elections.

Photographers Karim Mansour and Shady ElMashak each develop portraits based on the key moment when political motivations register on the faces of the politicians and ordinary people they met and interviewed. Both architect Shaimaa Ashour and blogger Abdulrahman Mansour explore the specific politics of spaces such as a public park in Maadi, Cairo, and a Nile Delta village respectively. Photojournalist Amira Mortada follows the week of a female candidate attempting to register as an independent in Alexandria. Blogger Moustafa El Shandawely, artist Mohamed Ezz Eldin, and photojournalist Mohamed Eid were each interested in the omnipresence and iconography of election posters and advertising tactics across Cairo.

وكالة الأخبار البديلة مشروع تجريبي أقيم على مدي الأشهر الاربع الماضية وجمع مجموعة من المشاركين في حلقات عمل وتدريبات تبادلوا فيها الخبرات والمهارات حول الدور السياسي والاجتماعي الذي تلعبه الصورة، بالإضافة إلى التدريب على مهارات التصوير الصحافي الأساسية. استهدفت حلقات العمل -والتي اشتملت على معالجة لموضوعات نقدية وقانونية وتاريخية - إثارة نقاشات فرعية مستمدة من تجارب المشاركين المتنوعة

اتخذ المشروع من تنوع المناهج والأساليب نقطة للبداية، وهدف إلى خلق مساحة يستطيع فيها التصوير الصحافي والتدوين والممارسات الفنية إثراء وتحدي بعضهم البعض. من هنا تمكن كل من المشاركين من البحث وصياغة قصة فوتوغرافية تعالج بشكل مفتوح وموسع المناخ العام في الأسابيع التي سبقت الانتخابات البرلمانية بـمصر

صاغ المصوران كريم منصور وشادي المشاق قصتين فوتوغرافيتين حول اللحظة التي ينطبع فيها الدافع السياسي على وجوه كل من السياسيين والجماهير الذين قابلوهما. واستكشف كل من المهندسة المعمارية شيماء عاشور والمدون عبد الرحمن منصور الخصوصية السياسية لأمكنة مثل حديقة عامة بالمعادي وقرية صغيرة بالدلتا على التوالي. وتقصت المصورة الصحفية أميرة مرتضى أثر مرشحة مستقلة بالإسكندرية لمدة أسبوع في سعيها للتسجيل بالقوائم الإنتخابية. واهتم المدون مصطفى الشندويلي والفنان محمد عز الدين والمصور الصحافي محمد عيد بالانتشار الأيقوني لملصقات الدعاية الإنتخابية حول القاهرة

The CIC Alternative Photo Agency Workshop

participating in the APA workshop from 3-14 October 2010.

CIC Alternative Photo Agency is a pilot project from Contemporary Image Collective, bringing together emerging artists, photojournalists and citizen journalists to receive training, to workshop ideas, and share skills about the political and social role of the image in their practices. Over ten days they will plan photo stories responding to social and political issues in Egypt today, each aiming to create two photostories for publication by CIC.

مركز الصورة المعاصرة يقدم مشروع وكالة الصورة البديلة والذي يجمع فنانين شباب, مصورين صحفيين ومدونين سيتلقون تدريبات بالمركز ويتبادلون الخبرات حول الدور المجتمعي والساسي للصورة في ممارساتهم. على مدى 10 أيام سيقومون بوضع خطة عمل لإنتاج سلسلة من الصور حول الأوضاع الإجتماعية والسياسية المعاصرة بمصر. سيقوم كل منهم بإنتاج سلستين من الصور الفوتوغرافية سيتم نشرها بمطبوعة خاصة بالمركز.

Open Lab Egypt (OLE) - Video Interactive Projects

participating in OLE workshop for interactive video art . it is my second experiment in the media art workshops . I liked that way of mixing art with science , it was very similar to the mix of my Engineering academic studies and my journey in visual arts .

Workshop for the production of ideas/projects around the concept of interactive image and sound, using a combination of free hardware and software platforms (PD and Arduino) to deepen in the use of electronics and programming.
The workshop is intended for art students, artists, designers and educators, contributing to development cultural production in local communities.

OLE
A long term project based on several workshop phases between Cairo and Alexandria, initiated with aims of developing the use of electronic interface within Art creation in Egypt.
The project phases will provide introduction to the technique, experimentation with tools, investigating ideas and concept evaluation.

One Minutes Workshop :

Agroup of impressive, original one-minute videos produced by local artists were screened last week at the Rawabet Theater, marking these amateurs’ first ventures into the motion picture medium.
The event was the product of a five-day workshop organized by the Townhouse Gallery and the Netherlands-based One Minutes Foundation. The workshop is part of a larger project called The One Minutes Africa Project.The main objective of the workshop is to provide artists, from across the black continent, with relatively inexpensive video media to express an idea or a concept in just one minute.“Most artists who are not experienced with video find it difficult to produce a video, but when it’s just a one minute video, it seems so much simpler and more encouraging,” says Aukje Dekker, a Dutch coach who toured the world, teaching techniques and principles of this artistic outlet.
The idea of one-minute videos originated in the Sandberg Institute in 1999 as part of a fine-arts postgraduate assignment. The concept took off from there and has been welcomed by artists all over the world.
